If you’re like me, you grew up believing in the American Dream. This “dream” is based on the theory that if you work hard, you’ll be able to take care of yourself—and your family—financially. You and your family will be happy. You’ll be living the American Dream. Have you ever noticed that the reality for most people is very different? Doesn’t it seem like people are working too much, but not really getting where they want to be?

I want to write a little bit about goals. Notice that I didn’t write “resolutions”. I know that, as I’m writing this, people have already stopped going to the gym. The first couple weeks went great, but the enthusiasm is waning. Old habits have set back in, and many people have already given up on 2008 being “the” year.

I hope I’m not describing how your year is going so far. If you’re making good progress, then I want to congratulate you on your success. If you’re slipping, or have given up, please hang in there! Keep going. Give it another chance. You can do it!

Last week, Warren Buffett held his annual charity auction on eBay. Two investors topped the other pre-qualified bidders with a winning bid of $650,100. The winners and five of their guests will join Mr. Buffett for lunch at the Smith & Wollensky steakhouse in New York City. The auction benefits the Glide Foundation, which provides social services to the poor and homeless in San Francisco.
